OIG is dedicated to helping VA ensure that veterans and their families receive the care, support, and recognition earned through service to their country. The OIG strives to help VA achieve its vision of becoming the best-managed service delivery organization in Government. The OIG continues to be responsive to the needs of customers by working with the VA management team to identify and address important issues.


OIG is organized into three line elements: the Offices of Investigations, Audits and Evaluations, and Healthcare Inspections; the Office of Contract Review; and the Office of Management and Administration. In addition to the Washington, DC, headquarters, the OIG has offices located in 30 cities throughout the country.

The Special Assistant has a support role on a wide range of internal management and operational matters affecting the Office of Audits and Evaluations, OIG, VA and other government agencies.

The Special Assistant performs the following duties:

- With the Executive Assistant, plans and coordinates work to be accomplished based on priorities, requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of employees.
- Gather background data, does research in preparation for briefs, positions papers, speeches, and testimony on a wide range of subjects for the AIGAE and DAIGAE to present at high-level meetings and congressional hearings.
- Collect and analyzes information/data, draws conclusions, and develops and implements recommendations to management.
- Presents information, ideas, and advice in a clear, concise, and logical manner both orally and in writing.
- Formulates and recommends polices, procedures, and standards to promote more effective and efficient operations and establish protocol or requirements for OAE projects and staff.

Qualifications and Evaluations


Time-in-Grade: Candidates must have been a GS-12 for fifty-two (52) weeks, if applicable.

Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three (3) months in that appointment. Specialized Experience:

Fifty-two weeks of experience at the GS-12 level, or equivalent, that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes:

-Providing a support role on a wide range of internal management and operational matters, planning and coordinating work, setting priorities and coordinating schedules for completion of work.
-Providing advice, counseling, or instructions to individual employees on both work and administrative matters.
-Conducting research, collecting data and developing reports to support management decision-making.
-Analyzing administrative operations, and
-Identifying and making recommendations to improve work processes.
