Duties

The incumbent will have the following duties:  Systematic, critical, intensive investigation directed toward the development of new or fuller scientific knowledge of the subject studied with or without reference to a specific application.  The work involves theoretical and experimental investigations or simulation of experiments and conditions to develop principles, criteria, methods, and a body of data of general applicability for use by others. Specifically, plan and execute research projects on meso-, micro-, and nano-scale porous/structured materials for industrial and scientific applications; aid in the development a center of excellence for materials measurements and separations, especially as related to engineered nanoscale materials; to establish standards and measurement protocols for metrology relating to such materials; and to generate reference data for evaluating the properties of materials, including those with  industrial and scientific applications. Advance knowledge and skill in applying theories, principles, and methods of a chemistry and materials and of a specialty within that field.  Ability to define problems, perform background research, develop and execute a project plan, organize and evaluate results, and prepare reports of findings. Ability to consider precedents and use judgment to research, select, interpret, modify, adapt, and apply available guidelines to specific problems or issues.  Ability to present ideas and results in a clear, compelling and persuasive manner. Work with processing/structure/properties relationships in sorbent materials, zeolites,  meso-/micro-/nano-porous materials; nanoscale engineered materials using gravimetric and manometric/volumetric techniques; pycnometry; pore-size distribution analysis; surface area analysis; transmission electron microscopy x-ray spectroscopies; dynamic light scattering; reference materials; reference data; interlaboratory studies;

  • Education Requirements:

    Qualifications:

    Basic Requirements:



    1. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.


    OR



    1. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.


     


    IN ADDITION:  To qualify, applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level (or ZP-II at NIST).  Specialized experience is defined as experience using manometric and gravimetric methods for measurement of fluid adsorption on porous materials, including  micro- meso- and macroscale materials. Experience processing and understanding the structure/properties relationships in sorbent materials, such as zeolites. Experience handling  reference materials to generate reference data through interlaboratory studies.

    Master’s or equivalent graduate degree
