Specialized experience for the Economist position is experience that demonstrates: knowledge of professional methods and principles of economics and their application to research projects; statistical principles and practices; current research procedures and techniques; economic significance of the information reported on the tax returns, present and prior tax laws, and the impact of proposed law changes on research projects.

Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
  • Providing assistance in developing detailed specifications for performing several or all of the steps necessary to complete a project for collecting economic data (e.g., employment statistics or marketing data) from primary sources such as records of business firms;
  • Assuming technical responsibility for various phases of initiation, formulation, planning, execution and control of special studies or continuous projects;
  • Resolving complex problems or errors requiring professional attention;
  • Monitoring effective use of resources to advise supervisors of necessary remedial action or changes;
  • Performing research to locate new sources of data and analysis. OR

    Specialized experience for the Economist position is experience that demonstrates: professional knowledge of economic concepts, theories, principles and practices related to research and analyses of a variety of business specializations; skill in analyzing factual information to recognize and evaluate significant and critical factors, solve problems, draw rational economic conclusions and prepare reports; basic knowledge of economic factors related to international movements of goods and services, consumers and labor, money, and technology and have an understanding of the variety of factors affecting international economic movements such as tariffs, national and international law, transportation systems, and geographic considerations to address international issues, skill in oral communications to maintain professional relationships with IRS Economists and other professionals.

    Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
  • Conducting research and analyses involved in examinations that include issues covering a narrow range of industries and specializations;
  • Providing assistance and conducting various kinds of microeconomic research and analyses that require the study of economic structure, business practices and functions; competitive conditions, trade barriers, government imposed barriers, financial markets, interest rates, technology transfers and product life cycles;
  • Participating in reviews and analyses of economic, statistical, and tax data to determine the existence of a potential economic issue; conducts research in databases, professional journals and publications, government publications, and studies by other economists;

    Specialized experience for the Economist position is experience that required the application of comprehensive knowledge of economic concepts, theories, principles and practices related to research and analyses of a variety of business specializations; expansive knowledge of economic factors related to international movements of goods and services, consumers and labor, money and technology and an understanding of the variety of factors affecting international economic movements such as national tariffs, national and international law, transportation systems, and geographic considerations to address international issues; knowledge and skill in analyzing factual information to recognize and evaluate significant and critical factors, solve increasingly complex problems, draw rational economic conclusions, and prepare comprehensive reports; knowledge and skill in oral communications to explain and defend research findings. Serves where necessary as a qualified witness for the Government in litigation cases.

    Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
  • Conducting various kinds of microeconomic research and analyses that require the study of economic structure, business practices and functions;
  • Performing research and analyses involved in examinations that include complex issues covering an extensive range of industries and specializations;
  • Reviews and analyzes economic, statistical, and tax data to determine the existence of a potential economic issue; develops an effective workplan, conducts research in databases, professional journals and publications, government publications and studies by other economists;
  • Conducts various kinds of microeconomic research and analyses that require the study of economic structure, business practices and functions, competitive conditions, trade barriers, government imposed barriers, financial markets, interest rates, technology transfers and product life cycles;
  • Reviews and analyzes economic, statistical and tax data to determine the existence of a potential economic issue;
  • In tandem with senior economists, performs analysis to determine the value of tangible and intangible products, services, and assets, and evaluates the values and analysis reported by taxpayers.

    A. Bachelor's or higher degree in economics that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus. OR

    B. Combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in economics as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

    Examples of qualifying experience include:
  • a. Individual economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusion and report preparation;
  • b. Supervisory or project coordination assignments involving a staff of professional economists, and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information; or
  • c. Teaching assignments in a college or university that included both class instruction in economics subjects and include one of the following (1) personal research that produced evidence of results (2) direction of graduate theses in economics, or (3) service as a consultant or advisor on technical economics problems.
  • The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in economics.
